একের পর এক শিক পেরিয়ে তাঁর দৃষ্টি,
এতটা ক্লান্ত যে ধরে রাখতে পারে না
আর কিছু।মনে হয় ওখানে এক হাজার শিক
এবং শিকগুলোর পেছনে কোনো বিশ্ব নেই।
আঁটো খাঁচাটায় সে বার বার ঘুরছে।
তার শক্তিশালী নরম পদক্ষেপের আন্দোলন
কেন্দ্রনিবিড় ধর্মিও নাচের মতো,
যেখানে শক্তিমানও পঙ্গু হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকবে।
সময়ে সময়ে, চোখের তারাদের চুপচাপ কাপাকাপি।
একটা কিছুতে ওদের দৃষ্টি আটকে যায়,
টানটান বন্দী পেশি বেয়ে বেয়ে ছবিগুলো
হৃদয়ে ডুবে যায় এবং গহিনে হারিয়ে যায়।

Sein Blick ist vom Vorübergehn der Stäbe
so müd geworden, daß er nichts mehr hält.
Ihm ist, als ob es tausend Stäbe gäbe
und hinter tausend Stäben keine Welt.
Der weiche Gang geschmeidig starker Schritte,
der sich im allerkleinsten Kreise dreht,
ist wie ein Tanz von Kraft um eine Mitte,
in der betäubt ein großer Wille steht.
Nur manchmal schiebt der Vorhang der Pupille
sich lautlos auf –. Dann geht ein Bild hinein,
geht durch der Glieder angespannte Stille –
und hört im Herzen auf zu sein.

the movement of his powerful soft strides
is like a ritual dance around a center
in which a mighty will stands paralyzed.
Only at times, the curtain of the pupils
lifts, quietly--. An image enters in,
rushes down through the tensed, arrested muscles,
plunges into the heart and is gone.

In 1905 Rainer Maria Rilke moved to Meudon, France to take a job as Rodin's secretary. When Rilke told Rodin that he had not been doing much writing lately, Rodin advised him to go to the zoo (Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes) and look at an animal until he could really see it.
Rilke is the most famous German poet during the period of symbolism, an arts movement that started in France around 1860 and continued in Germany till about 1925. In reaction to realism and naturalism, symbolist poets wrote in a metaphorical and imaginative manner, reaching for dreams, ideals, and often for other-worldliness.
